Anthropic Backers Bank Billions Ahead of $2 Trillion Listing
Early and late-stage investors are poised for massive windfalls as the AI lab prepares for a public offering later this year.

Anthropic is on track to go public later this year at a valuation that could reach $2 trillion, a milestone that will deliver substantial financial gains to its extensive network of venture capitalists and early backers. Even before the official listing, the stakes held by these investors have already accumulated into billions of dollars based on the company’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion. The upcoming initial public offering is expected to further amplify these returns, marking one of the most significant financial events in the technology sector to date.
The disparity in investment timing has created a wide spectrum of returns among the company’s supporters. While some firms entered at valuations in the hundreds of millions, others committed billions of dollars when the company was already valued at hundreds of billions. According to data from Bloomberg, the current private valuation provides a baseline for the wealth generated by these positions. For instance, Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, invested in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021 when the startup was valued at just $461 million. PitchBook data indicates that Schmidt still holds approximately 1% of the company today. At the current private valuation, that single percentage point is worth nearly $10 billion, a figure that will likely increase if the IPO proceeds as anticipated.
Later-stage investors have also seen their capital appreciate significantly, albeit from a much higher starting point. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company’s valuation had already climbed to $183 billion. That massive late-stage bet is now valued at $17 billion. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double again once the company lists publicly, solidifying Iconiq’s status as a major beneficiary of the AI boom. The sheer scale of this investment underscores the confidence large institutions have in Anthropic’s long-term trajectory.
Menlo Ventures holds a similarly lucrative position, having led the company’s Series D round. The venture capital firm has invested more than $1 billion in Anthropic over time. This accumulated stake is now valued at $14 billion under the latest private market pricing. Menlo’s leadership in that funding round highlights the firm’s deep involvement in the company’s growth strategy and its continued support as the AI lab expands its operations and resources.
Sequoia, one of the most prominent names in venture capital, entered the fray earlier this year when Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. The firm invested $3 billion to secure roughly 1% ownership. Despite the high entry price, Sequoia has already more than doubled its initial investment. This rapid appreciation reflects the intense demand for equity in leading AI companies, even at late-stage valuations. Sequoia’s move signals a broader trend of established players rushing to secure positions in the most advanced artificial intelligence laboratories.
Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also reaped significant rewards. The company initially invested $35 million in Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round. Since then, Sound Ventures has funneled an additional $400 million into the company. This total investment has resulted in a stake that is now worth billions of dollars. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, but the original firm’s position in Anthropic remains a key driver of its portfolio value.
Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, has experienced the most dramatic percentage gain among the named investors. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. The board seat provides Spark Capital with direct insight into the company’s strategic decisions, a privilege that has coincided with exceptional financial returns.
These figures illustrate the immense stakes involved in the AI race. For the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions, the implications are both direct and indirect. As these companies grow, they influence the broader tech ecosystem, including the infrastructure and talent markets that support local businesses. The anticipated IPO will likely bring increased liquidity to the venture capital sector, potentially reshaping investment strategies across the country.
The windfall for these backers is not merely a matter of individual wealth; it represents a broader shift in how capital is allocated in the technology industry. The success of Anthropic and its investors may encourage further consolidation of capital in AI, potentially affecting other sectors. As the company moves toward its public listing, the focus will remain on whether it can sustain its growth trajectory and justify its high valuation in the eyes of public shareholders.
In the interim, the numbers serve as a testament to the early conviction of those who backed Anthropic. From Schmidt’s 2021 investment to Spark Capital’s recent gains, the timeline shows a consistent appreciation of value. The upcoming IPO will be the final test of this valuation, with the potential to cement these gains in the public market. For now, the backers are in a strong position, with billions already in hand and more potentially on the horizon.
